CAN Go: reimagining the walking cane for connected care

CAN emerged from stealth in May 2022 with CAN Go, a connected walking cane created to help people move with greater confidence while staying connected to the people who care for them.

Restored from CAN’s original May 18, 2022 launch announcement. The date reflects the original publication, not a backdated new post.

Rethinking an object that had stopped evolving

The walking cane is one of the oldest mobility tools in daily use. CAN’s starting point was that familiarity could be a strength: preserve the form people already understand, then add technology only where it serves a clear human purpose.

CAN Go combined mobility support with calling, location features, a light, activity information, and connectivity. The ambition was not to turn a cane into a complicated gadget, but to make useful capabilities available in the object already at hand.

Design beyond stigma

Mobility aids are too often designed as visible symbols of decline. CAN Go was shaped around a different idea: an assistive product can be desirable, personal, and confidently carried.

That design position became central to CAN’s work. Adoption is not separate from appearance and dignity. If people do not want a product in their life, its technical capability cannot help them.

Connection as a form of care

The launch positioned connectivity as a way to make communication available from the cane itself. Calling and location features were intended to support contact between a user and trusted people without requiring a separate phone for every interaction.

Those capabilities should not be confused with clinical monitoring or proof of improved outcomes. They established a product direction and a research question for CAN: how can devices share useful context with people and care organizations without creating surveillance or another disconnected stream of data?

The beginning of a larger platform

CAN Go began as a focused mobility product. In retrospect, its combination of a physical device, activity information, communication, and caregiver relationships informed the broader platform direction CAN later pursued. That is a company interpretation of the product’s evolution, not a claim established by the 2022 launch coverage.

The durable principle was simpler: add technology to a familiar object only when the added capability justifies the burden of charging, connectivity, support, privacy, and learning. The intelligence should serve the act of moving through the world, not turn that act into device administration.
